When I first joined this game many years ago, motorsport was thriving in SA. The media reported on every event and spectators flocked to circuits or to rally stages. The media even took part in many of the events, taking on each other in challenges or trying to keep up with the top drivers. Since then motorsport has declined. So has media interest. Many of my colleagues in the motoring media fraternity do not report on events, let alone actually attend them. Now there is a push to try to regenerate that interest and it helps that the newly revamped Kyalami circuit will be hosting not the usual small number of competitors, but a massive 400! And I will be one of them, representing Business Day, along with seven other motoring journalists who will all be chasing glory as part of the Volkswagen Media Challenge at the circuit this weekend.
