CHRIS THURMAN: Shifting picture of SA’s lines and marks

British artist David Hockney was recently asked to define what turns a picture into a masterpiece. One of the works he chose to help answer this question was Rembrandt’s 17th-century ink sketch A Child Being Taught To Walk, which he describes as "a perfect drawing". Hockney admires Rembrandt’s ability to use just a few lines and marks to suggest the atmosphere of the intimate scene and to hint at characteristics of the subjects portrayed: their physical bearing, their facial expressions.
