Analyst firm Frost & Sullivan has chosen a company that converts old cooking oil into diesel as the 2016 winner for its annual South African company of the year award. Biogreen Diesel was established by South African restaurateur Roy de Gouveia to ensure waste cooking oil that was no longer fit for human consumption was not recycled and sold to poorer communities. The company began by processing 3,000l-5,000l a month in Cape Town, and now processes 20,000l-25,000l a month. With new operations soon set to launch in Johannesburg and Durban, its combined output will be more than 300,000l a month. Margins in the recycling business tend to be thin, but Frost & Sullivan said Biogreen had grown strongly and would continue to do so once its franchises began operations. Feedstock tends to account for 75% of a product’s price, so the company’s use of waste cooking oil as raw material makes its biodiesel affordable.
