State opens door for nuclear procurement
Eskom plans to issue a request for proposals soon, derailing a court case over legalities
The state has cleared the way for the nuclear procurement programme to proceed, and Eskom would issue a call to market for proposals this week. The surprise revelation was made by Eskom and Energy Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson in the Western Cape High Court on Tuesday. It brought to a halt the long-awaited court application by Earthlife Africa and the SA Faith Communities Environmental Initiative (Safcei) to have the nuclear procurement set aside, even before the substance of the hearing could get under way. The matter was postponed to early next year to give Eskom, which has been given responsibility for the nuclear build, to join the matter if it so wishes. At the start of Tuesday’s proceedings, the Department of Energy said it would this week gazette a new determination under the Electricity Regulation Act to procure nuclear energy.
