FORMER French president Nicolas Sarkozy, who hopes to regain power next year, says that if he succeeds he will try to renegotiate EU treaties. "Europe must be refounded with a Franco-German initiative for a new treaty," Sarkozy tweeted on Tuesday. Earlier this month, Sarkozy said that if he wins the presidential election his first trip will be to punt his plan to German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin. It will include overhauling the Schengen accord that allows free movement across some European borders. "If we have a base for a new EU treaty I will then go the UK to tell them this is the opportunity to do a new referendum to see if they want to link Britain to Europe." Sarkozy is seeking his party’s nomination in November. The conservative life-long politician was president from 2007 to 2012, when socialist Francois Hollande defeated him. Bloomberg
