The Democratic Alliance has defeated motions of no confidence in  Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba and council speaker Vasco Da Gama brought by the ANC in council.  After a lengthy debate, Mashaba won by 140 votes against 121, retaining his position as mayor. The victory was delivered with support from the EFF on Thursday night. Mashaba thanked the EFF, adding:  ''This is only the beginning of the change which we promised the residents of Johannesburg.'' The motion of no confidence in Joburg council speaker Vasco Da Gama also failed. Da Gama survived the vote by 140 votes against 120. Floyd Shivambu said earlier the EFF would not support ''opportunistic'' motions of no confidence brought by the ANC in SA’s metros. The EFF is the kingmaker in the Johannesburg coalition and voted for Mashaba as mayor in 2016, following the local government elections in which the ANC lost its majority.
