There have been 684 fatal crashes recorded between December 1-19, a 16% increase over the same period last year, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters announced on Tuesday at a media briefing. A total of 845 people died in these accidents, a rise of 17% on the same period last year. KwaZulu Natal, Limpopo and Mpumalanga were the three provinces that recorded the highest increases in the number of fatal accidents and number of deaths over last year. Pedestrians represented 34.3% of the total number of deaths with drivers at 23.8%. Some of the drivers were innocent but some were the cause of the crashes, "as they deliberately overtook on barrier lines, blind spots, travelled at high speed, were under the influence of liquor while some were fatigued and never cared just to stop for a moment," Peters said.
