Ugu District Municipality says it opened a case of sabotage and tampering with its water system after many residents were without water for days. The water crisis, which started as KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast was preparing for holidaymakers, arose from a strike to demand pension payouts. This came after the municipality ended a contract with a firm managing pension benefits, sparking fear that the workers would get no benefits on retiring or resigning. The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) threatened to cut off water in all areas and bring the municipality to its knees if its demands were not met. Water pumps feeding strategic areas were turned off, plant levels dropped and areas under the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality had no water for more than four days.
