THE populations of Gauteng and the Western Cape expanded over the past five years as people migrated in search of job and other opportunities.International migration patterns contributed to the trend, with 855,050 Africans and 51,337 Asians entering SA and 95,158 white people leaving between 2011 and 2016, data released by Statistics SA show.In addition, urbanisation and internal migration altered the provincial population profiles.The mid-year population estimates showed that, for 2011-16, Gauteng received an estimated 1.2-million migrants and the Western Cape took in 363,114 people. As people also left these provinces during this period, their net migration outcomes were gains of 585,211 and 168,786, respectively.In the same period, 247,437 people migrated from the Eastern Cape, while 305,030 left Limpopo.
