While Western governments reacted cautiously to the unfolding crisis in Zimbabwe, calling for calm and a return to democracy, Venezuela was outspoken in its condemnation of the military takeover, but China was warm in its re-affirmation of its friendship with the country. China said on Thursday its "friendly policy" towards Zimbabwe would not change. The country was paying close attention to the situation in Zimbabwe and hoped for stability and a peaceful, "appropriate" resolution, foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang told a daily news briefing in Beijing. China’s co-operation with Zimbabwe was "all round" and benefited both peoples, he said. "China’s friendly policy towards Zimbabwe won’t change. We will continue to develop friendly co-operation with Zimbabwe on an equal, mutually beneficial win-win co-operation principle."
