Deadly Burkina Faso attack ends with killing of assailants
Eighteen people died in the onslaught on a restaurant in the capital Ouagadougou, which the government says was a terrorist attack
Ouagadougou — A jihadist attack on a restaurant in Burkina Faso is over and the two assailants involved have been killed, the communications minister said on Monday. Speaking to Reuters near the scene in Ouagadougou, Communications Minister Remi Dandjinou gave the final death toll of the overnight attack’s victims as 18 killed. Earlier, authorities had suggested that three assailants had been killed, but the minister revised that figure. Another eight people were wounded in the attack. At least one of the dead was confirmed to be a French national. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack, and praised the “effective mobilisation” of the Burkina security forces. A Reuters witness saw customers running out of the Aziz Istanbul restaurant in Ouagadougou as police and paramilitary gendarmerie surrounded it amid gunfire.
