Heightened contestation for positions in the DA signalled a changing, and growing, organisation, party leader Mmusi Maimane said on Sunday. Maimane was speaking to Business Day after a hotly contested race for the position of DA leader in Gauteng between incumbent John Moodey and MP Ghaleb Cachalia. Moodey won by a landslide. He will lead the DA campaign to snatch SA’s richest province from the ANC in 2019. Maimane’s drive to transform the DA has caused some consternation, resulting in fierce competition for key posts. The battle between Moodey and Cachalia is viewed as an attempt by the “old guard”, who are increasingly uncomfortable with the direction of the party under Maimane, to reassert itself in a key province ahead of the 2019 election. Maimane said the competition signalled a changing party, in which stakes were higher.
