The Cabinet says it is willing to take any measures necessary to improve financial controls, Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe says. Auditor-general Kimi Makwetu’s latest report showed an almost 80% surge in irregular expenditure by government departments and their entities, to more than R46bn. The Cabinet was concerned about that increase, Radebe said at a media briefing in Parliament. "We are worried about the audit outcomes," Radebe said. "We are taking measures to curb the impact of these audit outcomes and improve controls. "There has been an improvement," he said. "Ministers are being called upon to ensure that these failings do not reoccur." While the 8% overall improvement in audit outcomes should not be ignored, Makwetu said, failure to spend and procure by the book left the door open for conflicts of interest and graft.
