Justice Minister Michael Masutha shot down the EFF’s call for SA’s decision to pull out of the International Criminal Court and the Rome statutes to be subjected to a referendum. Instead, Masutha said SA’s re-election to the UN’s Human Rights Council showed the international community had a high regard for the country’s constitution and the state’s commitment to democracy. During a heated debate in Parliament on Thursday, Masutha shot down suggestions that the country’s withdrawal from the international court be subject to a referendum. He also rubbished claims the exit had been announced without consultation. "You accuse us of doing this behind Parliament’s back. Do you not remember that we held debates ... in this house? "The ANC national general council indicated we would move in this direction. Where is the secrecy in that?" he asked.
