In an apparent climb down, the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has started the process of reconciling with independent candidates and communities that turned their backs on the party. In eThekwini Municipality alone, where 103 wards were contested in the August 3 municipal elections, there were at least 58 independent candidates - many of them former ANC members who represented the party in past elections. Five of them won against candidates fielded by the ANC. Many of these independents and their supporters said they were sidelined in the candidate nomination processes for supporting ousted premier Senzo Mchunu in his battle with Sihle Zikalala, currently ANC provincial chairperson and MEC for economic development, tourism and environmental affairs.
