President Jacob Zuma signing off on the nuclear deal will be the final showdown next year, said BusinessLIVE and Rand Daily Mail editor Ray Hartley on this week’s Editing Allowed. He said Zuma would be forced to push through the deal to ensure the backing of his “coalition of hyenas”. “The minute that he doesn’t deliver the nuclear deal, he loses their support,” Hartley said. Business Day editor Tim Cohen said those pushing for the deal would want expediency more than anything. “If I’m a hyena, what I want is speed. I also want the Russians to present to me something that I can present to the public that looks as though the people of South Africa are not going to have to pay for it.
