President Cyril Ramaphosa is well into his current term as ANC president. It’s hard to believe less than two years remain until the next ANC elective conference. Ramaphosa has, hands down, had the toughest time of it as first terms at the helm go: managing an ANC at its weakest and most depleted in the post-apartheid era; his administration weakened by a decade of corruption and state capture; institutions crumbling; and, to top it all, a pandemic.

Even without Covid-19, success was a long shot...
