Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has given the clearest indication yet that next week's mid-term Budget will contain no surprises - good or bad. Gordhan - speaking yesterday to members of the union UASA in Boksburg, on the East Rand - said the fiscus would continue to be constrained because there had been little economic growth this year. Low growth depresses the amount of revenue flowing into the fiscus. Gordhan's mid-term budget speech will be closely watched - largely as a result of the decision of the National Prosecuting Authority to charge him with fraud. An affidavit sworn by Gordhan in connection with the decision by major banks to jettison the accounts of businesses controlled by the influential Gupta family, has sharpened the focus on him both domestically and internationally.
