President Cyril Ramaphosa and the progressive side of his government are losing much sleep agonising over how to fix the companies under the control of the state. It’s not that they don’t know what needs to be done. The problem is that their own trade union allies won’t allow them to mend the bankrupt mess that is PetroSA, Eskom, SAA or the SABC.

But a sustainable solution that may be acceptable to the union bosses and their communist allies does not need to be rocket science. Let the workers own the companies in their own right, and let them partner the state and the people as co-shareholders...
