Ramaphosa will come through, but he is going to need time to clean up the unbelievably enormous mess left behind by Zuma and his corrupt cronies
Look, the past fortnight wasn’t a good time to be in SA. I know. I was in the beloved country for a bit of business and my happy mood was not at all helped by the headlines. What a horrific two weeks. Stats SA said we were in a recession. Jacob Zuma said he didn’t know what state capture was all about. The crime stats were, well, just horrendous. The rand tanked. Again. Ace Magashule met Zuma in a clandestine meeting but Magashule said it wasn’t really a meeting but, well, he was just meeting stalwarts of the party. Ho-hum. Believe that and you will believe anything. He wasn’t meeting Kgalema Motlanthe or Thabo Mbeki for some hard truths, was he? Poor Cyril Ramaphosa. The halo that even a cynic like me had placed over his head just six months ago is slipping. Badly. Even my usually optimistic friends were moaning. Why does Ramaphosa seem so weak, they asked.
