It is 1930, people. That’s the era “The Donald” has taken us back to. Forget what humanity has achieved over the past 70 years — global co-operation, human development, the works. Forget the Bretton Woods institutions. Forget the UN and Nato. Forget the fact that no matter how you look at it the world is a better place because the US came to the party. Not according to Donald Trump. It is now “America First” and the rest of you leeches better know it. I don’t know what the globe will look like in 10 years, but if Trump has his way the US will not be part of its evolution. It’s his way or the highway — and his way is a US that does not care about conflict in Kenya or democracy in Azerbaijan. His inauguration speech sounded a lot like a speech by a xenophobic looter in Soweto, but what can you say?The only thing that Trump seems intent on doing is uniting “the civilised world against radical Islamic terrorism, which we will eradicate completely from the face of the earth”.
