The Americans have a term for it, double jeopardy. A person cannot be tried twice for the same crime. The Fifth Amendment states: “Nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb.” I wish someone would tell that to the Hawks who have hounded the brave, fearless (and axed for no reason) former Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan. We read this week how plans are afoot to reinstate charges against the beleagured Gordhan, ostensibly over the alleged bugging of the NPA offices in 2007. In spy parlance, the codename for the alleged cloak and dagger transgression was “Sunday Evenings”.Now I have always loved the Commodores 1997 song Easy Like Sunday Morning … sung effortlessly by their lead singer Lionel Richie.
