I have not been a senior leader of the DA for more than a decade, but I remain a strong and convinced supporter of the party and its leader, John Steenhuisen. He and the party are SA’s best hope. No other political party is anywhere near being able to hold the ANC to account or to challenge it in cities and towns throughout our country.

Robert Stone, in "DA Leaders Have Lost their Way" (Letters, July 8-14), shows his ignorance of what goes on in politics. He is unaware that the DA is the largest nonracial party, by far. It is committed to constitutionalism and the values of our constitution. It believes in equal opportunity for the whole of a diverse SA, and it upholds freedom and fairness for all. It believes in a social market economy.

The party does a remarkable job of holding those in power to account. Where the ordinary parliamentary processes fall short, it does not hesitate to approach the courts, at considerable expense, to enforce the values and provisions of the constitution and protect our people from an over-mighty government.

Where the DA governs, it is not perfect, but the Western Cape is widely recognised as the best-governed province, and the five best municipalities in the country are all DA-governed.

In my opinion, this record more than justifies a confident vote for the DA.
