In an age of increased governance, I wonder if there is still a place for the old-fashioned stockbroker-sponsored conference — the kind in which the broker acts as matchmaker between potential investors and listed companies. Invariably there are no journalists present, so with a wink and a nudge let’s call it "useful" information being provided to the potential investor. I say "useful" because not all investors have access to that information — how can they if the conference is outside the public domain? I think we have finally got to the point where all results presentations are open to the press. Not too long ago journalists were not allowed to ask questions at the Old Mutual results. But after nearly 20 years, the highly successful Merrill Lynch conference at Sun City is still a closed event, with no press or public access.
