PETER BRUCE: Zuma is down but not necessarily out
Resignation, recall or a no-confidence vote are on the cards — but don’t count Jacob Zuma out just yet
So it supposedly ends today. The national executive committee (NEC) of the ruling ANC meets near Pretoria this afternoon. It will end the presidency of Jacob Zuma, ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa told a crowd in Cape Town yesterday. But the end may not be the end. Three things could happen today. Ramaphosa could report to the NEC that Zuma has agreed to resign. In this case, following Thabo Mbeki’s impeccable example in 2008, Zuma will draft a letter of resignation to national assembly speaker Baleka Mbete, who in turn will preside over a vote for a new president. Cabinet will not be obliged to resign. Similarly, Zuma could acquiesce to being recalled by the NEC, in which case a similar process will likely play out. Alternatively, the NEC could recall Zuma and he could refuse to go. The NEC delegation could arrive at the presidential residence in Tshwane to find Zuma is simply not there.
