Revelations over the weekend that DA chief whip John Steenhuisen does not have a university degree and might, as a result, lose his position, achieved the seemingly impossible: the ANC came to the defence of this agent of white monopoly capital. The ANC’s Twitter account on Sunday told the nation that a real leader did not need a degree. It went on to name 10 of the world’s richest and most influential people, including Bill Gates, Richard Branson and Mark Zuckerberg, all of whom do not have degrees. The ANC spin doctors were not the only ones to scrum around Steenhuisen. Some commentators who not long ago found it unacceptable that SA could be led by a matric-less Jacob Zuma now say a degree is not so important, as long as a person can do the job and has leadership qualities.
