JSE AltX-listed Gold Brands Investments is in talks to launch fish and chips chain Harry Ramsden’s in SA.The British brand will join a crowded category dominated by large rivals The Fish & Chip Co, Fishaways and Ocean Basket. Gold Brands says bringing the brand to SA depended on securing the right local partner.Harry Ramsden’s was bought by multi-millionaire Ranjit Singh Boparan from food franchise operator SSP in 2010.The business was started by Harry Ramsden in 1928 in a wooden hut next to a tram stop in Guiseley, West Yorkshire, England, where it offered fish and chips, tea and bread and butter.Within three years Ramsden opened his first fish and chip “palace” with grand oak panelling and crystal chandeliers, which remains part of the style of Harry Ramsden’s restaurants across the UK and Ireland where there are 45 stores.
