Visa red tape and some of the provisions contained in the Department of Trade and Industry film incentive programme are threatening the viability of Cape Town’s film industry. According to the city, the film industry contributes about R5bn to the domestic economy and has over the past three years created more than 35,000 jobs. Cape Town has attracted A-list actors and crews, and movies such as Safe House, starring US actor Denzel Washington, were shot in the city.During an official visit to the US last week, Western Cape economic opportunities MEC Alan Winde, Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille and a provincial trade and investment promotion delegation met with senior executives in Hollywood at Universal, Warner Bros and Disney studios. The visit was aimed at furthering opportunities for growth in the film sector. The city hopes to be the location for the filming of other film and television series by major studios, and it hopes to understand what would be required to achieve this. ...
