I find that the organograms produced by some of the large asset managers seem to get more confusing. Take Sanlam: when I first visited it in the 1990s there was an equity, a bond and a few people blending them for pension funds. Last week I caught up with the team on a visit to the fleshpots of Tyger Valley. These days its organogram should probably be in 3D. The legacy Sanlam Investment Management (SIM) is just one of five businesses in the investment core. SIM has been refocused to concentrate on third-party clients; a small team including former chief investment officer Gerhard Cruywagen now works on Sanlam’s policyholder funds full time. There is no longer a chief investment officer at SIM, but there is a new marketing-savvy CE, Azola Zuma, who has plenty of experience schmoozing the Public Investment Corp and other big clients. Why hasn’t it alerted more people to the fact that it was first over one year in the Alexander Forbes Global Manager Watch, even if luck played a part? ...
