I had to chuckle in sympathy when I read Chris Powell’s letter about the SA Revenue Service (Sars) flagging an airfreight shipment of less than R30,000 ("Forced to Take Our Business Elsewhere", Letters, March 7-13). One of my hobbies is model car racing — Scalextric is the generic term — and I bring in parts for my own use from time to time. I recently received a stern letter from Sars requesting a copy of the invoice for my latest purchase — all of the princely sum of £92. I read of illicit tobacco sales, rampant corruption and complete inefficiency, and wonder why Sars sees me as a criminal. Is there hope?
