If 2017 turns out to be anything like the wild roller coaster of 2016, we’re going to need some light relief. Sport, fortunately, played its part in 2016 in lifting the mood — if you ignore the Springboks. The highlights were Wayde van Niekerk’s world record-breaking gold medal sprint over 400m at the Rio Olympics and the Proteas’ cricket triumph in Australia. The flip side to those sporting celebrations included Ernie Els taking six putts to complete the first hole of the US Masters, Bafana Bafana failing to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations and the Springboks having the worst season in their existence. Let’s get the rugby and football out of the way. SA’s Super Rugby teams will need a miracle of the kind the Lions provided this year to reach the final again and the Springboks will continue to struggle, new coach or not; the problems of SA rugby lie deeper than a tackle-shy flyhalf.
