Government and automotive companies must stop talking about bringing black participants into the motor industry and actively make it happen, says Volkswagen SA (VWSA) MD Thomas Schaefer.No-one doubts the need to involve black-owned companies in the industry — "it is a moral imperative as well as an economic one" — but no-one wants to take the initiative, he says. "It’s like we’re engaged in a permanent Mexican stand-off."Now, however, there may be a breakthrough. VWSA last week hosted the industry’s first open day for black companies hoping to manufacture automotive components. Though the 46 taking part are less than 10% of the number the industry will eventually need, it’s a start.Several other vehicle manufacturers endorsed the initiative and attended.
