Lectures at Wits will resume despite violent clashes, management says
University spokesperson Shirona Patel says lecturers are teaching on West Campus as well as on other campuses
THE University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) is adamant that lectures will resume at the institution, despite the violent clashes between students and police on Tuesday morning. "We are asking students to stay inside buildings while police disperse the demonstrators‚" university spokesperson Shirona Patel said. She said lecturers were going ahead on the Braamfontein West Campus and other campuses‚ and that police had used stun grenades to disperse groups of protesters who had been assembling at the institution, disrupting classes. At 11.30‚ there was an uneasy standoff outside the Great Hall‚ following running battles that ensued after EFF chairperson Dali Mpofu expressed solidarity with the students.
