Consolidation is unavoidable, say telecom firms after ruling
The Competition Commission’s hard line against a deal between Vodacom and Remgro’s CIVH has other players, like MTN, scratching their heads
Almost a year after talks to buy Telkom for an estimated R30bn fell through, MTN still believes consolidation in the South African telecom sector is inevitable. “From our perspective [it] remains absolutely necessary,” said CEO Ralph Mupita on the release of the group’s interim results.
Which is why he, like his peers at Vodacom and CIVH, was taken aback by the Competition Commission’s determination to quash a merger between the last-mentioned two. ..
