SUBURBS in SA’s major cities have benefited recently from an influx of fibre optic cable projects, as competition between big operators intensifies. Last week MetroFibre Networx announced that it will lay fibre optic cables at Kyalami Estates, a project worth R13m.The enormous fibre to the home infrastructure rollout in recent years has been led by companies including Telkom, which alone aims to connect 1m households with fibre by 2018.Telkom’s fibre to the home project allows users to download a movie in less than seven minutes and a music album in only eight seconds.Other companies laying fibre cables in SA cities include Dark Fibre Africa, MTN, Vodacom and Vumatel, and the competition will be good for consumers.MetroFibre says its footprint already extends to seven estates in Johannesburg, including Kyalami, and to suburbs including Paulshof and Rivonia.
