It’s hard to stay dry when you’re in the eye of the storm — but the chief electoral officer at the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), Sy Mamabolo, is determined to keep his head as the election approaches. 

It is a tense and emotional election season but it is important to give the IEC the respect and freedom to do its work. The commission should be treated with a healthy dose of vigilance, but also respect and rationality. Its work, after all, is tightly controlled by legislation and it can be hauled to the electoral court for the slightest deviation.  ..
