As I pondered what to write for my August column, I drew a blank as it’s been an odd couple of months in the JSE small- to mid-cap universe I cover.

Granted, it’s winter and perhaps the “sell in May and go away” trend is more prevalent this year than before. It may also be that beleaguered South African citizens are just hunkering down after months of gloom afflicting their lives, and investing in the sagging domestic economy is not top of mind when there are rocketing household bills to pay...
