NELSON Mandela Bay will host the 2018 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in September next year — a "pinnacle event" on the global calendar. It is the first time the event will be hosted in Africa. Nelson Mandela Bay first hosted an Ironman event in 2004 and has hosted the Standard Bank Ironman African Championship since 2015. Ironman CEO Andrew Messick said the organisation was delighted to bring the 70.3 championship to the bay. Ironman 70.3 is known as the "half Ironman". It involves a 1.9km swim, a 90km cycle and a half-marathon run — exactly half the distance in each discipline that the full Ironman race entails. Traditionally the full Ironman has taken place in Nelson Mandela Bay, and the Ironman 70.3 in East London.
