KZN commission of inquiry to probe killings before municipal election
A senior advocate, Marumo Moerane SC, will lead an inquiry starting this week into political killings in KwaZulu-Natal before the municipal election
An inquiry into the string of political killings in KwaZulu-Natal before the municipal elections begins this week. KwaZulu-Natal premier Willies Mchunu announced on Sunday he had appointed Marumo Moerane SC to head the commission. Other members are Vasu Gounden and Prof Cheryl Potgieter with Solo Mdledle as the commission secretary. The provincial cabinet approved the commission’s establishment in September. At least 20 people were killed in the province since the beginning of the year due for what are believed to be political reasons. The murders include 12 ANC leaders and three candidates who stood for the party in the August 3 local poll. The SACP lost three members due to skirmishes between its supporters and those of the ANC, its alliance partners, in Inchanga, west of Durban.
