JONATHAN JANSEN: Write your own script, pack in the action, and change the narrative
If you haven’t heard it yet, you’ve missed one of the most remarkable speeches ever made at any awards ceremony. The American filmmaker Tyler Perry had just won the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Ultimate Icon Award 2019 when he delivered this stunning acceptance speech, which is worth quoting at length:
“It’s all about helping someone cross [the road]While everybody was fighting for a seat at the table,Talking about ‘Oscars so white, Oscars so white’,I said ‘you all go ahead and do that’But while you are fighting for a seat at the table I’ll be down in Atlanta building my own [studio]Because what I know for sure is if I can just build this tableGod would prepare it for me in the presence of my enemies.”..
