Whether the next US president is Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump will make little difference to US trade policy with SA and neighbouring countries, according to analysis released by BMI Research on Tuesday morning."Despite a more protectionist stance, Trump’s election would be unlikely to significantly threaten trade with Africa," it said in a report."Sub-Saharan Africa is not a traditional political talking point the way Mexico and China are. Moreover, the African Growth and Opportunities Act, which governs trade relations between the US and much of sub-Saharan Africa, is beyond the president’s mandate, and not due for renewal until 2025."Trump has indicated he plans to cut US aid abroad, especially to countries that "hate" the US, but has not said which countries may have their aid cut.
