BY INVESTING IN THE CLOUD Atlas AMI Big50 exchange traded fund (ETF) an investor will get a proportional shareholding in a sprawling portfolio of stocks listed across various African bourses — but not the JSE. While a spread of 50 stocks would appear to offer a reassuring degree of diversification, it is important to note that the AMI Big 50 portfolio is weighed heavily towards telecommunications and banking. At last count these two sectors made up almost 56% of the portfolio value. There is a meaningful exposure to food companies and industrials, and, not surprisingly an underweight exposure to the ailing African oil and gas and mining sectors. The ETF carries a management fee of 0.45% a year, and total fees work out at about 0.9%. This seems reasonable for a portfolio of shares that is not too easily accessed or researched by SA investors.
