The joint standing committee on intelligence has shortlisted 10 candidates for the position of inspector-general of intelligence, shutting out ANC MP Cecil Burgess from the process. On Tuesday the committee deliberated on 12 candidate names and dropped two. The list of candidates included hopefuls that tried to get the job in 2015, when Burgess was still considered as the odds-on favourite to take on the position. These included Jayshree Govender, Smange Jele and Andile Kilifele. The committee said out of 17 candidates, only 12 met the minimum advertised requirements for the job. Burgess missed out on the job when the ANC repeatedly failed to get the two-thirds majority needed to get him appointed. The main gripe against him was that as chair of the ad hoc committees on Nkandla and the secrecy bill, Burgess displayed unwavering commitment to advancing the government line.
