Mondi is expanding operations while Sappi is doing the opposite THE MONDI group is making a push into emerging markets, largely in the Asia Pacific region. It already has a presence in a number of these countries. The ones that are attracting most institutional investor interest, though, are China and Iraq.It already has a few plants in China and is building a consumer packaging plant in Taicang, in Jiangsu province. Production is planned to begin before the end of the year. In Iraq, Mondi has the first industrial bags plant in the country. Production started earlier this year in support of the cement and building material industries, which are being kept busy rebuilding large parts of Iraq.Group CE David Hathorn says the company is following important customers into these markets, but at this stage the investments in China and Iraq are small. About $20m has been spent in China and less than $10m in Iraq. "However, there is lots of growth potential in these countries," Hathorn says....
