The Gauteng department of co-operative governance and traditional affairs is working on establishing a joint operational centre to deal with the water crisis in the province. With water levels in the Vaal River system at an alarmingly low 27% as of Monday night‚ the department said the aim of the centre was to plan around and improve the state of readiness for any form of contingency, to deal with the steady decline of water levels. A provincial technical team meets every week to monitor and plan responses to the water crisis in the province. This team is made up of members of the department‚ Rand Water‚ municipalities and the Department of Water and Sanitation. However‚ due to the urgency of the situation‚ the department wants to establish a joint operations centre‚ likely to be housed at the disaster management centre in Midrand‚ to provide a more comprehensive response to the water crisis.
