NPA harmed economy with unsubstantiated Gordhan charges, say attorneys
The NPA’s unsubstantiated fraud charges against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan inflicted trauma on the economy and SA’s image, says the Law Society of SA
The national attorneys’ body, the Law Society of SA, said on Monday it was "gravely disappointed" that charges were brought against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan before all relevant information was obtained. The law society began by welcoming the "rather belated" decision by National Prosecuting Authority head Shaun Abrahams to withdraw charges against Gordhan, former SARS commissioner Oupa Magashula and former acting commissioner Ivan Pillay. But the society said it was "gravely disappointed" that a matter "of this magnitude and implications" was decided without first obtaining all necessary information. Bringing charges and then dropping them appeared to be consistent with the public perception that there is a politically motivated link, said society co-chairmen Mvuzo Notyesi and Jan van Rensburg.
