The Banking Association of SA (Basa) has hit out at the "costly saga" of state institutions targeting Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan. This was in reaction to Monday’s announcement by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) of its decision to withdraw charges against Gordhan and two other former SARS officials, Oupa Magashula and former deputy commissioner Ivan Pillay. The trio were charged over Gordhan’s approval of an early retirement for Pillay in 2010, when Gordhan was commissioner of the SARS and Pillay his deputy. Magashula is also a former SARS commissioner. NPA head Shaun Abrahams said on Monday he overruled the decision to prosecute – a decision made by his subordinates – after finding that trio had acted lawfully.  The rand strengthened to R13.56/$ after the charges were dropped, the best level since October 3.
