Former Mail & Guardian editor Nic Dawes was among the first to react‚ posting: "@AndiMakinana please tell me this isn’t true." "Sadly‚" Makinana replied‚ "it is true Nic." The event had not been listed on the club’s website but Makinana said she had been made aware of the planned talk by a press alert e-mailed by the club, of which she is a member. Hofmeyr is no stranger to controversy. While styling himself as an advocate for Afrikaner self-determination‚ his detractors have described him as an "apartheid apologist". eNCA’s Lynne O’Connor (@LynneOConnorSA) tweeted: "@AndiMakinana with respect‚ why does his opinion matter?"
