Position overview

Business Day is looking for a Companies Editor to co-ordinate our company-news coverage for BusinessLIVE, our digital business platform, and Business Day. We’re seeking an applicant with news-editing and writing skills who has a nose for news and a good sense of what our readers want to see online, in print and in video. Applicants should have a demonstrated knowledge of business and finance and be able to quickly commission, edit and publish relevant and informed articles. The position involves liaising with reporters and editors to ensure the best possible coverage of the companies sector.

 Main responsibilities 

  • Deliver quality and extensive companies coverage in digital, print and video products;
  • Being comfortable with constant deadlines throughout the day, in line with our “digital-first” strategy;
  • Quick editing skills to ensure stories provide a full picture timeously;
  • Manage fast, digital- and print-news coverage;
  • Ensure journalism is produced at a consistent high standard;
  • Previous experience at a news-wire agency or web publication will stand candidates in good stead;
  • The ability to contribute original ideas for on illustrations, especially for web; and
  • Contribute to building digital audience.

Business Day is looking for a Resources Writer. We’re seeking an applicant with a track record of news, analysis and sharp analytical pieces. Storytelling, scoops and the pursuit of ambitious stories are encouraged. An understanding of SA’s complex regulatory environment in the resources sector, experience of covering court cases, understanding financial results, and an appreciation of labour and community dynamics are critical. There is increasing appetite for ESG (environmental, social and governance) stories, needing an understanding of these three legs of socially acceptable mining. Applicants should have a demonstrated knowledge of business and finance and be able to drive day-to-day coverage, company earnings, fast-moving breaking news and enterprise stories. The magazine’s purpose is to provide in-depth intelligence on the key issues of the day, going behind the numbers and headlines to find the backstory behind the events. We do this through compelling narrative, sharply-written news stories, and exclusive articles.

 Main responsibilities 

  • Manage a short- and long-term news diary;
  • Generate story ideas, spot industry trends and keep abreast of developments across the political economy;

  • Edit with accuracy, flair and an eye for detail;
  • An aptitude and good EQ for managing reporters;

Junior audio producer

Reporting to: Head of multimedia

Location: Parktown, Johannesburg 

Position overview

We are looking for a multi-talented audio producer to work in our multimedia team creating and managing audio content – some original, some not – for Arena Holdings websites including TimesLIVE, BusinessLIVE and SowetanLIVE. The position is multi-faceted and the candidate will be involved in all levels of the production process. The candidate must show passion for the medium.

 Main responsibilities 

  • Writing, producing, recording, editing and publishing audio content in a manner that is clear, engaging and meaningful to our audience.
  • Writing text articles to accompany audio and associated material.
  • Repurpose audio from existing video content and ensure proper publishing across group
  • Record, edit and create audio file from all scheduled in-house podcasts
  • Assist in the overall production of in-house podcasts, including organising people and interviews
  • Contribute to the development of new audio series for the group as and when needed
  • Source supplementary links, pictures, audio material and videos where necessary.
  • Collaborate with head of multimedia to fine tune content when required
  • Regular diary co-ordination with the group title editors.
  • Weekend and after-hours work will be required at times.
  • Keep abreast of current trends in the podcasting industry across editorial, product and revenue

Skills and attributes

  • Solid knowledge of the South African and global podcasting industry. But most importantly, be passionate about it and want to learn more.
  • Good audio editing skills
  • Proficiency in Premiere Pro and related audio editing software
  • Good people skills; be able to be patient in a busy newsroom and be flexible
  • Excellent writing skills and command of the English language.
  • Superior time management and communication skills
  • Confidence in coordinating, organising and conducting interviews

Qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree/diploma in journalism or a related field
  • Current driver’s licence
