Karen Short started By Word of Mouth in 1993, providing lavish spreads for top-end events, primarily for Johannesburg and Pretoria's high society and corporates. Her husband Adrian joined the business in 2003. Today, it employs 300 people and is planning an aggressive expansion of its Frozen for You business.
In 2016, the couple sold a stake to JSE-listed Famous Brands. The deal has since been unwound, with the Shorts buying back the stake in 2020. ..
